Phyrexian Revoker, Reclamation Sage, and Acidic Slime are good to have around to slow the opponent down in the early-game and something like Woodfall Primus or Terastodon can slam the door once you get them online (preferably assisted by a discard outlet like Jace, Vryns Prodigy). They Unburial Rites their Griselbrand, but I have Anguished Unmaking. The two most busted Green cards in the whole Vintage Cube are Channel and Natural Order. I could also see Mind Twist, Tolarian Academy, Timetwister, Library of Alexandria, and Strip Mine entering the conversation here as cards that are plainly absurdly above rate and are all excellent at getting more mana worth of effects than your opponent. Additionally, their is one high-end spell you want: Tooth and Nail. White just happened to be open, and I had enough white cards to get to 40 in my extremely good blue deck. Beyond that, cards like Sulfuric Vortex, Mother of Runes, Entomb, Mana Leak, or anything that provides some identity to your deck are fine places to start. And for your amusement, here is my misadventures in playing White / Black Disruptive Aggro: Match 1, Game 1: I drop a Turn 1 Soldier of the Pantheon. What do you think? Its a high-powered experience where you get to draft the most expensive and powerful cards in Magic, and be paired up against somebody with just as incredible of a deck as yours. They play (Selesyna Signet) into Reclamation Sage, destroying my creature. Compare it to using Oblivion Ring on Consecrated Sphinx. Personally I dont see the appeal of Birthing Pod in Vintage Cube, but it does certainly do more for archetype diversity than all of my Mono-Green Ramp darlings that are on the outs. Copyright 2020 Star City Games. Ive 3-0ed plenty of Vintage Cubes staying mono-blue, and blue is most commonly my primary color in any two or more color decks. I swing back for 5 and break their signet with an Anguished Unmaking to keep them off mana. On balance these swaps dont do much to alter the positioning of red decks in the Cube, but Bloodthirsty Adversary offers the most for being a cheap threat that can be a big swingy play when it needs to be. Blue is the most powerful color in the Cube and there are also just more blue cards than the other colors. The decks your players will draft and build need to have the tools to be successful decks. Nobody else wants Tendrils of Agony so you should try to wheel it, and if it doesnt come back around your deck isnt going to work out anyway. Lots of pink. All you can hope to do is race. The Scarab God and Fallen Shinobi are some of the best creature threats out there. Personally, I hate this kind of deck in the Vintage Cube because its far too "fair" for my liking. How Much Does It Cost? Gulp. Which do you want: more forests for Rofellos? And yet as a deck it is much more powerful than the sum of its parts. There are some truly incredible non-basic lands to be looking out for in the cube. Counterspells, Control Magic effects, and even bounce spells are all generally pretty powerful in most Cubes and their strengths are amplified in Vintage Cube as ways to interact with opponents leveraging fast mana. We swing with everything but Ophiomancer to flip Legion's Landing. I play Spectral Procession. Entomb into Reanimate is great, and if you are able to load up on great card selection you can make it happen consistently, but cards like Buried Alive and Oonas Prowler are typically too inefficient to be competitive and it generally makes more sense to me to play good creatures that are at least somewhat castable and try to do that in an deck with Signets and other, better forms of fast mana. Its really easy to assemble these combos and make incredibly strong mana bases early on. You still want to pick up the strong tempo cards like Counterspell, Expressive Iteration, and Dack Fayden, but theres a much bigger focus around the combo. Id be remiss if I didnt mention Balance and Armageddon, as I know a lot of folks are really big on these cards. Blue is plainly the most powerful color in Vintage Cube (evidenced by the fact that the only nonartifact card in this tier is a blue card) and there are also the most blue cards in the Cube list as compared to the other colors. The Cube is incredibly expensive to put together unless proxied, which makes it a rare occurrence to see in paper. A deck with a lot of artifact mana and planeswalkers can seriously leverage a Balance, though its really tough to get all of the right cards together as theyre all high picks, and Id rather have the fast mana and planeswalkers than the Balance. When I sit down to draft vintage cube, I have about 7 decks in mind that I will choose between depending on my first several picks. The big winner with these lands is, of course, Niv-Mizzet Reborn, so I suppose theyll be fan favorites as well. The Vintage Cube has returned to Magic Online. Howdy, gamers! The swings in Vintage Cube can be a lot to handle, though I do find joy in the fact that midrange decks are just horrible. If thats your thing, thats cool, and ultimately the cost of featuring Niv in the Cube is one slot and a lot of these gold slots are replacement-level anyway. Its so much more popular then and its harder to draft a strong deck when so many more players are going for it. There are some great hatebears in the Cube too in the form of Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Esper Sentinel. Shelldock Isle is also very easy to trigger. Vintage Cube is all about efficiently leveraging your mana. I play a Shambling Vent and swing with Mutavault which trades off. On the other end, the best cards to ramp into are: Craterhoof Behemoth, Ulamog, The Ceaseless Hunger, Primeval Titan and Terastodon. There are 540 cards in the MTGO Vintage Cube. The other way you get into Mono Red is that you backdoor in. Ugh. And the actual cards in your deck are so narrowly aggressive that they don't really slot well into anyone else's strategy. Mono-white aggro is my choice for the third tier 1 deck. The bar is much higher for Vintage Cube and the card is more or less replacement level by virtue of being an aggressive three-drop, but its a great option to fill out your curve once youre full up on ones and twos. Then I play Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, making an Ally token. First, let's start in the most logical place - blue decks. Regardless, the Power 9 are about as impactful as youd assume. These provide ample ways to ramp out and often fix your mana. Costing zero is really nice, but if you play Mana Crypt long enough youll lose to the coin flips some of the time. Bribery and Treachery will similarly often result in well worth the value of tapping five lands. Ill see you in the queues. Green Suns Zenith is among the more important cards for this archetype, and the difference between a green deck with or without Craterhoof Behemoth is night and day. Or off-color mana sources? Here's the downside to Grixis: in general, you should expect that when you draft the powerful blue, black and red cards that your fellow drafters will also know this is the optimal strategy. And while some may think that's a good strategy, I tend to find them to be overrated that I am content with 1 or 2 in most decks and will always take the real win conditions, tutors, and fixing, especially true dual lands and fetchlands over the Signets. I tend to be down on Chandra, Pyromaster, but its decent out of the sideboard against green and white x/1s and to stop blocking. I imagine this is because, unlike Bribery, its not directly responsible for winning the game, but it is far more flexible and is generally worth well more than the five mana that it costs. In Pack 1 I was thinking I would end up as a Dimir deck, though the only good black card I got the entire draft was Fallen Shinobi and I didnt see any good fixing. But suppose you don't want to fight over Grixis. Some of these tiers will be exhaustive lists, while others will be a sampling of the nature of that tier, which I will make explicit in my thoughts on each category. All the time, for example, I might go P1 P1 Mana Drain into P1 P2 Badlands. We play a Mother of Runes which gets Force Spiked. #thumbwrap { I Tidehollow Sculler their last card and play my sword. This is perhaps deserved after the huge upgrade that white recently got with Palace Jailer being reintroduced to the Cube along with the addition of Solitude, though I will still miss the Landing. They play Looter Il-Kor. There are more than a few cards that are half of a game-winning or infinite combo in the Cube, and knowing what they are can help you know when to pick them up or when to pass them. Library of Alexandria is perhaps one of (if not the) most powerful lands in the Cube. Id also like to direct your attention towards Channel and the many powerful bomb Eldrazi, like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn which dont always get picked. .article-footer-ad .footer-ad-text{ Lots of pink. 2023 Wizards.
